She did also post that video on a European platform, but even many people in this group aren’t used to check at first whether or not a video is available on a European platform too https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x9jkxe0
Daily motion is owned by the French canal+, a public company.
Maybe I’ve gone too far in my open source and decentralised convictions, but the only benefit I see here is that the company is based in the EU. It has the same profit driven structure as Google/YouTube.
Why I see this as a problem?
Option A- the platform grows but it can’t monetise effectively: they will need to seek more revenue by further monetising users and advertisers. Expected result: enshittification
Option B- the platform grows and becomes very successful. This is a publicly traded company, so growth is everything. They will once again seek further monetisation. Expected result is the same.
What’s more, having extremely powerful and wealthy corporations leaves us on the path the US has taken, with strong lobbies of private interest (basically legal corruption).
Shouldn’t we use this turning point to move to a better alternative, instead of substituting foreign cancer with a home grown variety?
True, although I think it still has advantages to switch to platforms like DailyMotion (although I’m not a fan of it, and see multiple disadvantages too):
To weaken the monopoly of the big monopolist, YouTube in this case. Most people are hardly able or willing to leave any monopolist, and it they do, the will only start with something that’s comparable, understandable, easy, and has scale. Not to something that requires some kind of safari through a complicated fediverse jungle where they immediately get lost in discussions about instances and stuff.
To boost jobs, skills, expertise and innovation in building this kind of tech environments. Which later can contribute to better European alternatives than just relying on whatever USA thinks is good for us.
Furthermore, Canal+ is owned by Vincent Bolloré, a far right billionaire on a crusade against any little progressive idea. It’s no better than YouTube.
100% agree, and I see no easy way to get over that. Maybe a good starting point could be to also post the video on an alternative platform and mention that alternative platform to the YT audience, encouraging them to test it out?
As a content consumer … none of those “alternatives” are alternatives to youtube.
They all immediately take you to a “how to buy hosting on our platform, and why our platform is good for hosting” pages. Rather than just taking you to the hosted content. So as a consumer, I now need to work out how to consume the content there. And … I ain’t gonna bother.
You can’t start a movement by only posting to places where there are no (or not enough) people. The majority of people you need to convince will be on YouTube.
I don’t disagree, but literally looking for followers on one of the biggest platforms owned by one of the ‘bigtech’ biggest tech, as an “influencer” kinda defeats the whole purpose. Also, she’s not ‘starting a movement’.
Relying on people to go to YouTube to watch the video that more than likely just points at things already written and linked to on the sites that have already gained a massive following without YouTube is not unnecessary, but it is unneeded.
I still think Youtube, Facebook, Instagram, TikTok are good places to promote. This is where you reach people who do not Buy European yet nor do they use Fedi.
It would be nice if she would cross-post to PeerTube from now on, though.
I am not really in the influencer culture either, but that I wouldn’t take that up as my fight, let people watch what they like ¯_(ツ)_/¯
I’ve no problem with letting people watch what they like, but as she’s obviously getting paid by YouTube as an influencer, I’m pretty sure this is just the ‘buy European’ version of Greenwashing.
Honestly… this feels like needless purity-testing to me.
Yes, this person earns a living on YouTube. That is where the people are and that is where the money is.
But that doesn’t mean they would be entirely unwilling to switch to alternative platforms once that becomes economically viable.
And in the meantime they are helping by informing people that alternatives exist, and where to go to find these alternatives. That will hopefully help European platforms grow to a point where “influencers” can meaningfully switch over
Edit: I’m not a fan of purity testing, because it is generally counter-productive to actually achieving your goals.
You need to meet people where they are, and not expect them to fully fit in with your ideal standards right out of the gate.
That is how you get people on board with what you want to achieve.
This person earning money by using the buy European platform is akin to Greenwashing, as mentioned for buy European.
As for purity-testing, how many “influencers” is too many for something like this?
What are they influencing mostly, the usage of YouTube to make money or the fact that they don’t use the alternatives that they are supposedly promoting?
I’ve not checked, but does this influencer have any accounts on the European alternatives? Social media or video hosting sites?
If not, then this is self promotion more than promoting the movement, or whatever you choose to call it.
Why doesn’t she start the video pointing to the alternative video sites that the video is also posted on, and save some viewers from the privacy issues that come with the big tech sites?
YouTube is not a ‘single thing’.
If you don’t understand the buy European movement works or the privacy issues behind the bigtechs, then that’s on you.
Using Google’s YouTube to do it. Requires their viewers all to watch YouTube… 🤕🙄

sadly that’s where the numbers are, duno what you can do about that when Youtube has a monopoly on video content

Avoid it.

youtube.com the content is right there.
Youtube is a platform for consumers, that creators have to work for.
Because people like her aren’t using the alternatives that they are claiming to promote.
There are other alternatives with plenty of content.

Big " yet you participate in society." energy with this
Unff…
Yes, if a single thing is not European, they deserve to die in fire for their sins! /s
